Two stars of the movie Heathers died at an early age: Jeremy Applegate (Peter Dawson, whose character prays he will never commit suicide) committed suicide with a shotgun on March 23, 2000, and Kim Walker (Heather Chandler, who had the line “Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?”) died of a brain tumor on March 6, 2001.
When you stay up really late finishing a book and the next day you feel like a zombie, not only because you’ve barely had any sleep but also because you’ve finished your book and you don’t know what to do with your life now.
I think the idea of “if you can go about your life normally then you don’t have a mental illness” is a very dangerous one because it keeps people who need to get help from getting help. They think “I can still go about my daily life so I must be okay” even if they are struggling and suffering.
especially since so many mental illnesses change what it means to be “normal”. it lies to you in your own voice. tells you it’s normal to need to give yourself a thirty-minute pep talk before you can go downstairs and eat a bowl of cereal, it’s normal to panic because you have to go fill up your car, it’s normal to lay in bed for hours even when you’ve got something fun to do, it’s normal to walk around with static in your head rather than thoughts. in a lot of cases it’s not the sudden snapping of a bone but osteoporosis, it’s the slow leaching of strength, it’s tripping down a couple of stairs and sitting in a heap with a compound fracture and remembering how you used to brush this off like it was nothing, what’s wrong with you, next time just walk more carefully just deal with the setback just be more resilient. it changes your image of your daily life from “work school friends hobbies self-care sleep” to “work school friends self-care sleep” to “work school sleep” to “school sleep” to “sleep” to “sleep sleep sleep sleep guilt sleep” and you think well, i was alive yesterday, i’m alive today, i’ll probably be alive tomorrow, that’s my daily life. that’s me going about my life normally. i don’t need/want/deserve any help. i’m just a lazy person.
My favorite thing in the world is coming across a book that reminds me why I love reading
